9.24.2020 | The Joint

Welcome back to the red bench – it’s Thursday, and I am thinking about the joint I smoked last night…

What a great thing a joint is, right?!? It’s a classic.

Pre-rolled, bones, reefer, muggles, sticks, doobies – so many names over the years… but its all the same, cannabis wrapped in a rolling paper. It doesn’t get much simpler than that!

How many of you got stoned for your first time on a doobie? I started on a pipe, but rolling joints has been a regular part of my life for nearly four decades. I’m okay at rolling, but I prefer to use a rolling machine to really get a decent joint – my hand-rolled joints always end up with a big knuckle in the middle. I would not list “joint-rolling” as one of my skills.

For the last ten years or so the best joints I’ve smoked have been rolled by my friend Josh. Josh runs a delivery service down in Long Beach, and has very skilled fingers. Somehow he puts a certain pressure on the joint when he’s rolling it that makes the thing turn out just right – tight with a perfect amount of air when you smoke.

Last night, after the New Review Wednesday posts and socials were done for the day, I got a chance to really unwind with a fat joint I picked up last week. The joint was a promo, and only cost a buck. I like getting a gram of herb for a dollar!

Grateful Dave – this was a pre-rolled joint from Grizzly Peak, the same company that produced the Jelly Donut I looked at on Tuesday. I got this joint because I bought an eighth of Jelly Donut – it was a dispensary promo.

The packaging says the pre-rolled contains “1g Indoor Flower and Sugar Trim in Raw Natural Paper” and mentions on the side that the herb is a hybrid. Hmmm. There are a lot of hybrids out there, which one?

The package contained a nicely rolled cone joint. Nothing special, just a bone, ready to be lit. And that’s just what I did.

You know what I hate when I smoke a joint? It’s when the burning part of the joint starts to run down one side of stick… and this one ran big time. Damn. It really took a lot of my attention trying to stop the run, which distracted me from getting high. Nearly halfway through the joint I’d solved the running problem and by that time the high was just starting to hit me.

Hmmm… that’s a nice buzz coming on – feels like it leans towards Indica, I thought.

I concentrated on the flavor of the joint – full of raspberry flavors mixed with an earthiness. But something else lurked in the flavor… commercialization.

Smoking herb is a nearly spiritual experience for me. I cut up the nugs in anticipation of what’s ahead… deep in the herb meditation I roll a joint, my mind getting prepared for the journey ahead. Romantic? Yes, because I’m a bit of a romantic at heart, and I think smoking the herb should be a special experience.

Smoking this joint had none of the romance. Two-thirds of the way through the joint I kept thinking how “commercial” the herb tasted. This was not a joint of tenderly cherished and respected nugs of herb gently cut up and rolled with love. There was none of that, because I know exactly how that feels. While smoking this joint I pictured machines whirling, joint-filling machines spinning and humming, and the wheels of commerce turning.

I was able to smoke down the whole joint by myself, and that should tell you something about the potency… not a powerhouse herb. It felt like 14-16% THC even though the container label said 19.90% THC.

You might have gathered by this point that this joint did not knock me out – it did not win me over. The buzz lasted for over an hour and every time I checked in with myself to see how I was doing I felt the same commercial feeling. Strange.

The whole experience made me miss my friend Josh, who I only get to see once or twice a year. Not only do I miss hanging out with him but I miss his hand-rolled joints. Nothing gets me higher it seems than smoking a joint with Josh, except that one time I did dabs with Josh (oh my!), but that’s a story for another day…

I’ve never been a fan of joints. I don’t like the smell of my fingers after smoking one or the hot boxing of it or trying not to waste any and don’t like smoking the papers or leaves they’re wrapped up in! But I’ll never turn down a hit from someone, even during covid! ?
