10.2.2020 | The THC Chase

Welcome back to the red bench – let’s talk about THC!

If you’re like me, one of the first things you check when picking up an herb at a dispensary is the THC levels. It’s the current measure of how potent a strain you’re getting. Most people, myself included, will pass on an herb with just 14-16% THC for something with 24%, just about every time. But, what if we’re all wrong looking at THC as the measure of a good herb?

THC – tetrahydrocannabinol, a crystalline compound that is the main active ingredient of cannabis.

I must admit, just focusing on the THC keeps it simple. After all, isn’t it the THC that gets you high?

This is the conventional wisdom, but cannabis researchers and scientists are coming to other conclusions that challenge that understanding.

Straight THC will get you high, but the high will be lifeless and lacking all the interesting effects we’ve come to associate with smoking the herb. When you’re lighting up a bowl of freshly packed flowers you are getting a whole package of chemicals in that smoke, not just THC. There are numerous terpenes, flavonoids, and cannabinoids that shape the experience we call “getting high”.

That smell, when you pack that bowl, is going to effect your high. The flavor of the herb when you take a hit, that’s going to effect your high. The whole amazing mix of cannabinoids you’re not tasting but are thick in that smoke you’re inhaling will effect the high. This is called the “Entourage Effect” and we’ll be talking a lot about this in future issues of Jon’ Daily Sesh.

More and more researchers are looking into how the various compounds in cannabis effect the high and I suspect that a few years down the road we’ll have new standards to use when buying herb.

For now, I’m going to start shifting my thinking about THC and start looking at terpenes a lot closer. After having the experience of buying herb that was 24% THC that fell flat and the current herb I’m smoking has just 18% THC and it’s getting me way high, I’m going to be looking for new standards to measure my herb. And, of course, I’ll keep you posted!

Have a great weekend everyone – and until next week, best of health.

5*****’s ➕ , as always Jon 🙂 Absolutely Agree, now that I’ve learned so much about the terps and the other cannabinoids, too many?, that are in the flower, etc. I believe, the THC, can, get higher. It’s the TAC or THCv, idk lol and the methods used to get high, as well. The heat really isn’t the best. I think?? Straight up, the BESTEST subject to speak about. Someone with depression, Pstd, anxiety, etc., all need to look at what terps are in their product. I know I need limone and pinene. I don’t want to feel sleepy, so I look, or try with this distancing and the butenders lack of care here, LOL, which terps are in, for what I “should” get. Wake and bake, daytime use, you don’t want the “sleepy” terps. Pain, etc becomes more difficult. SFV OG is supposed to be great for pain. Not daytime and energy. That was my first dispensery experience?. They did not like that I knew what “I” needed. Haha ? so I got screwed? The “entourage effect” YASSSSSS!! Enjoy your high??? and weekend?. I’m just popping on my Gmail now.
